South Pacific Map showing the Cook Islands
The Pacific Ocean was the last ocean to be found and explored by Europeans. The first sightings were in the 16th century by Spanish explorers including Balboa; however the most well-known European navigators are Captain Cook (from whom the Cook Islands derives its name) and Captain William Bligh of the Bounty. The vast Pacific Ocean is larger than the total of the world's land masses. The 180 Meridian and International Date Line bisect the ocean and pass through the eastern part of the Fiji Islands. When the cross this line the date changes.
