Rarotonga Island Map
RAROTONGA is sometimes mistakenly thought of as a country in its own right. In fact it is the main capital island of Cook Islands. The majority of the country's population live on Rarotonga and it is here that the main capital town of Avarua is found as well as the International Airport. Not only is the island the gateway to the Cook Islands, but it is also an enchanting destination for those seeking an idyllic South Pacific island vacation. Rarotonga resorts, hotels and bungalows are found all around the coastline.
Rarotonga Location Facts
- Located in the 'Southern Group' of the Cook Islands
- Latitude -21.24' South
- Longitude -159.78' West
Roughly circular, and with a sealed coastal road, it is easy for visitors to get around the island. White sand beaches lead into a beautiful calm lagoon, with a fringing reef and the deep azure blue of the Pacific Ocean beyond. There is also a cross-island hiking trail offering tourists the opportunity of seeing more of Rarotonga's majestic central peaks and rainforested interior.
The origin of its name comes from the words down (raro) and south (tonga). Ancestors first arrived in Aitutaki, and Rarotonga was therefore found southwards of Aitutaki.
